...In my previous article entitled “All Terrorists are Muslims…Except the 94% that Aren’t”, I used official FBI records to show that only 6% of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil from 1980 to 2005 were carried out by Islamic extremists. The remaining 94% were from other groups (42% from Latinos, 24% from extreme left wing groups, 7% from extremist Jews, 5% from communists, and 16% from all other groups).

But what about across the pond? The data gathered by Europol strengthens my argument even further. (hat tip: Koppe) Europol publishes an annual report entitled EU Terrorism Situation and Trend Report. On their official website, you can access the reports from 2007, 2008, and 2009. (If anyone can find the reports from earlier than that, please let me know so we can include those as well.)

The results are stark, and prove decisively that not all terrorists are Muslims. In fact, a whopping 99.6% of terrorist attacks in Europe were by non-Muslim groups; a good 84.8% of attacks were from separatist groups completely unrelated to Islam....

Their message of Islamophobia has been repeated many times since the George W. Bush era: Islam is inherently violent, Christianity is inherently peaceful, and there is no such thing as a Christian terrorist or a white male terrorist. But the facts don’t bear that out. Far-right white male radicals and extreme Christianists are every bit as capable of acts of terrorism as radical Islamists, and to pretend that such terrorists don’t exist does the public a huge disservice. It's no secret that I believe the North American Church has really screwed the pooch when it comes to missions as a whole. Honestly? The more I study and read and learn from more experienced missionaries, the more strongly I feel that the majority of the “work” we're doing around the world in the name of Jesus has little to no value, or worse, is actually causing harm to the people we've set out to help/reach/bless/save/whatever.

He ought to have breathed it alike into many bodies, and have sent them out into all the world.[1]

The above quotation is from one of Christianity’s earliest and most stringent critics, the 2nd century philosopher named Celsus. His irritation with Christianity is more than evident here: how could such a backwater sect make claims to revelation of universal importance?  Such claims were only more audacious in Celsus’ eyes because he considered Christianity to be composed entirely of anti-intellectual simpletons who preyed on the weak.[2] I’m not sure some of Christianity’s contemporary critics have moved away this position.

In fact, the notion that one group of people can claim to be the sole possessors of an important universal truth has remained odious in the eyes of those on the outside of that group and, if anything, has only increased as our society becomes more diverse and so many religious and cultural traditions live, quite literally, side by side. How arrogant, some exclaim, does someone need to be to claim that they have the absolute truth about God and reality. Christian missionaries are regularly portrayed in a negative light, with critics pointing out the fact that cultural triumphalism and imperial motivations often accompanied European missionaries in the early modern period. Indeed, the many stories of disastrous “missions” to South and Central America that involved the Conquistadors are well known and terribly sad. One might also mention heinous acts like the forced “Christianization” (which really just meant “Westernization”) of Aboriginals in Australia or Native Americans in North America. All these things are true, and they are truly heartbreaking.

Do TBM's See Missionaries as Naive & Arrogant?

Reading all these missionary blogs and letters makes me wonder what adult TBM's REALLY think. I stopped believing on my mission and resigned shortly after so I was never in their shoes before.

Missionaries are so preachy and clueless and love to get on their high-horse, even with members. The reason they are this way is because most are very young and never had to live a normal adult life. Plus they are stuck on a mission where they have nothing to do BUT missionary work. They have no job. No kids. No REAL LIFE issues to deal with and the only thing they are allowed to do is proseletyze.

A couple of months off the mission and 99% of them come back down to reality and lose the "I'm gonna save the world and do everything in my power to convert the heathens and make all the slacker members live like our Lord and Saviour Tommy Monson."

Members have got to be rolling their eyes at some of the things these preachy and clueless 19 year olds say, right?!

When someone comments from Peru or Vietnam or Sudan, I click, and I read. Because the world fascinates me. It is a big, beautiful place, and God is doing amazing things on all corners of it. Absolutely.

But, as I have read missionary blogs, and as I have watched videos about world races, I am struck with the subtle arrogance of the Western missionary’s language. ..

Everyone is now over familiar with the event of several weeks ago, when an American missionary mother and her daughter were killed by a bullet fired at their plane, which a Peruvian fighter pilot decided was running drugs. While it was first a poignant human tragedy, it was also a political one, especially since American anti drug "advisers" were actually on the mission itself. The lively issue was thus exacerbated by the consequences of expansion of the "drug war" in Colombia, and its impact on surrounding countries and South American political integrity in general. The event is also alarming because Colombia is a vast country in which an earnest American high-tech adventure may well suffer the revisit of an earlier jungle exercise in moral remedy called the War in Vietnam.

But the presence of the missionaries raises a more basic question: what were they doing there in the first place? What on Earth gives some people the right to decide that their view of God or nature or destiny is the right one? What permits them to conclude that other people pointlessly labor with false gods and false values and need to see the light? What profoundly arrogant sense of the correctness of their ideas empowers missionaries to wrestle with the lives of strangers who may be wearing weirdo native gear? And the same applies to potential converts wearing the college sweatshirts encountered by the pairs of young Mormon missionaries?prim in their white shirts, men with thin black ties?earning their bones of piety by roaming State College USA for lost souls in deep sophomoric peril.

In the fuss over the human loss and its political implications, what was largely overlooked is the extraordinary vanity and presumption that underlie the zeal of missionaries. They make it their goal and active business to disrupt the most fundamental ideals and values of the people on whom they inflict themselves. The measure of missionary success is how much dissatisfaction they can create among the often-poverty-stricken people they encounter. Missionaries only fail when their victims are holy waterproof.

Missionaries are frank imperialists. But because they operate in the spiritual realm, they continue to enjoy a fuzzy kind of permission to conduct a kind of business that is largely impossible in other less ethereal spheres of life….

As I have long maintained, conservative Christian microparties are highly irresponsible, sectional and fractious organisations and shouldn't be entrusted with mainstream political power. Case in point- Australia's conservative Catholic "Democratic Labour Party." And, its "Rise Up Australia" Party.

Given that several opinion polls now appear to show the Conservative Party inching closer to MMP's five percent threshold in the wake of the Dirty Politics scandal because Colin Craig and his entourage were untouched by it, I thought I'd pen this latest cautionary piece about the consequences of having a conservative Christian political party holding a legislature's balance of power. In this instance, the culprit is the conservative Catholic "Democratic Labour Party," currently represented in Australia's federal Senate (or is it...???)

The lesson of the DLP is clear to those who choose to observe and comprehend it. Religious social conservative political parties are populist, sectional, sectarian and factionalised political entities. If anyone is foolhardy enough to ignore that, they will run afoul of disintegration and instability if they rely on such organisations as potential coalition partners. Given the unwelcome surge in Conservative Party support, this is a useful lesson for New Zealand voters as well as Australians.

If one needed another object lesson in this area, albeit not from a conservative Catholic perspective this time, witness the extremist Sri Lankan-born Australian Pentecostal minister Danny Nalliah, leader of "Catch the Fire Ministries", who founded his Rise Up Australia Party in March 2013. However, RUA's ethos is distastefully sectarian, with much invective directed against Muslim immigration and against Australian multiculturalism. According to a biographical article on his Catch the Fire website, he was born in Sri Lanka and was a drummer in a band before the lead guitarist became a fundamentalist Christian. He alleges that he worked with an "underground" fundamentalist Christian church in Saudi Arabia, which does not permit Christian conversion efforts and that he and his family preached and lived near Mecca. He claims to have been instrumental in the release of several Christians arrested in Saudi Arabia in 1998.

However, in a much more sinister direction, after he moved to Australia in 1998, he and another fundamentalist minister, Dan Scott, were both at the centre of a racist vilification case when the Islamic Council of Victoria alleged that Muslims were repeatedly attacked in a Catch the Fire seminar, newsletter and website article in the Supreme Court in 2007. On his website, Nalliah boasts that "God has spoken to him through dreams." In particular, one Catch the Fire piece caused considerable anger in Victoria when he linked that Australian state's 2009 Black Saturday bushfire tragedy, in which 173 Victorians lost their lives, to that state's decriminalisation of abortion. Nalliah also stated that unmarried former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard was a heathen "living in sin" with her partner and that former Australian Greens leader Dr Bob Brown was an "openly practising homosexual." Despite his Sri Lankan immigrant origins, Nalliah has also reached out to the neofascist Australian League of Rights in the past.

Rise Up Australia is a reprehensible organisation, but its sectarian venom is what one has come to expect from the Christian Right, just as much as its homophobia, transphobia and racism. Dare New Zealand risk entrusting any similar fundamentalist Christian microparty with the balance of power and responsibility?

Fundamentalist religion can bring out a mental disorder. Religious delusions and hallucinations are very common.

…At around 11 or 12 I began to have hallucinations, then delusions. It was not until 17 (the age I am now) that I started anti psychotic medication. I definately believe Pentecostalism made it worse: the way they get in groups, scream, fall on the floor, the music...it can make anyone psychotic, especially someone with a disorder.

I would imagine that the voice you heard was in response to the pressure to hear voices. When that's the expectation, one would feel inadequate to not be able to meet it, and that alone may lead one to manufacture an experience.
I wonder if one joins a pentecostal church because one is schizophrenic or if the positive value put upon hallucinatory experiences triggers and fosters incipient psychosis. I do know that some schizophrenic individuals I have known felt especially comfortable there.

I don't happen to be a pentecostal--I've been an agnostic for over thirty years--but I know that the interpretation that "evil voices" require exorcism is dangerous. I've known people who were told to quit taking their anti-psychotic medication because they were possessed, and that just set them up for further problems and made one individual I knew become suicidal.

I don't think I was pressured; none of my peers were pressured in that way. I'm sure even people without disorders can have brief psychotic experiences under pressure and with lots of music, etc. Most people have at least one point in their life when they think more like a psychotic person. The difference is that it isn't as persistent as it would be with a disorder.

The Hawke cabinet approved guidelines for the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation to spy on Australians to gather foreign intelligence, newly released cabinet documents have revealed.

The cabinet agreed not to table the new powers in parliament or to allow them to be scrutinised by the newly established parliamentary joint committee on Asio.

The 1988-89 cabinet documents, released on Thursday by the National Archives, show Bob Hawke’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet was deeply suspicious of the attorney general’s guidelines to extend Asio’s powers to cover Australian citizens but the cabinet’s security committee approved the decision.

A CACHE of secret files stolen from ASIO and police and anti-corruption agencies has been discovered during a drug raid in Melbourne, raising fears of a major breach of national security and crime intelligence.

Police are investigating whether the former head of intelligence and phone tapping at Victoria’s Office of Police Integrity stole the documents.

The files were discovered on September 10 by detectives searching a house in Melbourne’s north as part of a drug investigation.

They found boxes containing sensitive national security and law enforcement documents, including files from ASIO, the OPI and West Australian police.

What does organised crime look like?

The term ‘organised crime’ often conjures up stereotypical images—whether they be of the Mafia-type brotherhoods controlling large-scale crime rackets such as drug trafficking and money laundering, or of highly visible outlaw motorcycle gangs. In Australia, these depictions are still highly relevant, but there is also a less visible face of organised crime, which can be camouflaged within the community and harder to detect. For example, fraudulent investment schemes may be accompanied by glossy brochures, seminars or webinars and be promoted through slick websites, making them appear to be legitimate, even to the most financially literate members of the community. Many serious and organised crime groups present and operate as authentic businesses.

Advancing technologies and the online environment have presented new opportunities for organised crime to take advantage of our society’s reliance on the Internet and automation. Cybercrime acts against individuals, businesses and governments, can be conducted from anywhere around the world, and can be easily carried out by individuals, organised crime groups or nation states. Defending the Internet against civilian and military intruders is now a high-priority global security problem. In November 2014, the Director of the United States National Security Agency told the House Intelligence Committee that some nation states had allegedly infiltrated the computers of critical industries (such as the electricity grid) to steal information and gather intelligence that could be used in the planning of an attack or to further advance malicious acts or interests, and warned of the ongoing risk of organised crime groups acting as proxies for nation states.

Organised crime groups involved in international drug trafficking are diversifying. No longer trading in one drug or commodity, some groups have begun trafficking in a number of commodities, including multiple drug types in the same shipment. Cooperation between organised crime groups is becoming more apparent, as is the intertwining of different types of criminal activities being undertaken by some organised crime groups.

Of particular significance in 2015 is the continuing threat of terrorism. The problem of Australians going abroad to fight is an emerging area of complexity for this country. As counter-terrorism efforts throughout Australia are enhanced, the linkages between terrorism and the broader organised crime and volume crime environments are being identified. These linkages include, but are not limited to, Australians who finance terrorist activities, Australians who leave Australia to support terrorist causes, and who may return to Australia with the intent of inflicting harm on the Australian community or may be recruited by organised crime groups seeking the specialist skill sets they developed in foreign conflicts.

What are the key characteristics of organised crime?

In the current Australian environment, serious and organised crime is exploiting three key capabilities in particular:

1. The ability to conceal criminal activity by integrating into legitimate markets

Serious and organised crime has become interwoven with our economic, social and political environments. Although organised crime has continued to operate in traditional illicit markets, such as the illicit drug markets, it has been innovative in infiltrating legitimate industries to yield and launder significant criminal profits. In some instances, organised crime has sought to infiltrate specific industries to further its own activities, for example by setting up businesses within the transport, resources or investment sectors.

2. Technology and online capabilities

The uptake of new technologies by serious and organised crime reflects the adoption of these technologies by the general public. Serious and organised criminals have proven themselves adept at identifying and exploiting new and emerging technologies to facilitate their crime, to expand their reach, and to provide them with the anonymity and distance from their crime which makes it difficult for law enforcement to detect and identify them.

The ability to harness new and emerging technology to criminal ends is so fundamental to the success of high-level serious and organised crime entities that many employ specialists ‘in-house’, or contract their technology requirements to other groups who specialise in the provision of illicit technology services, or simply purchase ready-made malicious software to conduct criminal activity.

3. The globalisation of organised crime

Serious and organised crime is necessarily transnational and global in nature. Although individuals and groups involved in serious and organised crime will always vary in their capabilities, geographical reach and sophistication, there are groups, networks and individuals operating at an ‘elite’ criminal level and targeting illicit markets in a number of countries simultaneously. They are highly networked, highly professional and extremely well funded, and they operate with high-level specialist advice—including legal and financial advice—that allows them either to evade detection or to operate within the gaps in legislative and regulatory regimes internationally.

Transnational organised crime groups have the ability to adapt to market requirements and demands. They have capitalised on the high level of demand in Australia for methyl amphetamine (particularly crystal methyl amphetamine, or ‘ice’). In the recent past, the methyl amphetamine market has been dominated by domestic production. Significant production is still occurring domestically, but there has recently been a sharp increase in detections of methyl amphetamine at the Australian border, suggesting that transnational organised crime groups have identified a gap in the market which they can fill.

How does organised crime affect us?

Organised crime affects the community in a number ways—for example, there is a financial cost to governments in identifying, investigating, prosecuting and preventing it, and it can harm the national economy by pushing out legitimate business or eroding public confidence in the banking, finance or investment sectors.

Serious and organised crime also causes harms to the community that cannot be measured by a dollar value. For example, those affected by illicit drug use and their families may suffer severe physical and emotional anguish, and those who have lost their life savings to fraud may suffer not just financially but also psychologically from their loss. Organised revenue and taxation fraud, including the use of complex business structures and phoenixing¹, deprives government of the funds needed to provide essential services such as hospitals, schools, roads and public transport.

In many cases, Australians are exposed to organised crime through the Internet. Cybercrime, predominantly the criminal use of malware, can target individuals and businesses, compromising their computer systems to steal data, or encrypting it and holding it to ransom. Individuals can have their banking credentials or their identity details stolen online and fraudulently used by a criminal, and Australians are falling victim to many online frauds, including ‘online romance scams’, with some people handing over up to A$100,000 to fake love interests.

In late November 2014, the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) was launched, allowing members of the public and small to medium businesses to report cases of cybercrime. It also provides the public with educational resources on how to detect cybercrime and avoid falling victim to increasingly sophisticated cybercrime methods. In the first quarter of 2015, more than A$234 million of financial loss was reported via the ACORN². This figure is based on values nominated by victims of cybercrime regarding the loss of data, money, goods and the compromise of personal information. Forty-one per cent of loss reported in the first quarter of 2015 resulted from online scams or fraud.

THE CONTEMPORARY FACE OF ORGANIZED CRIME FACE OF ORGANISED CRIME

In the two years since the publication of the last Organised Crime in Australia assessment, organised crime has become more pervasive, more powerful and more complex. Such is the risk posed by organised crime that governments around the world, including the Australian Government, have recognised for some time that organised crime has implications for national security. Australia’s National Security Strategy, released in January 2013, lists serious and organised crime as one of the seven key national security risks.

Globalisation has been embraced and exploited by organised crime, which capitalises on the way in which globalisation has greatly facilitated international communication, cross-border links, commerce and trade. Although organised crime now seems to have no borders or geographical constraints, combating organised crime and illicit trade has remained in many ways constrained by jurisdictional, legislative and state borders – a fact that is not lost on sophisticated criminals.

The rapid development of technology, and the increasing availability of that technology to users throughout the world, have significantly increased the dynamics, profile and reach of organised crime. The Internet enables global virtual networking and social interaction between criminals, and has enabled the establishment of ‘virtual marketplaces’ for illegal and illicit goods such as drugs, firearms, identification documents and child exploitation material.

Although traditional purchases through face-to-face contact will continue to be a key form of illicit transactions for the foreseeable future, these virtual marketplaces have created alternative sources of supply, bringing access to illicit goods to the keyboard of Internet subscribers all over the world, and have meant that those dealing or trafficking in illicit goods can be based in any geographical location and still connect directly with customers in any number of international jurisdictions. In this way, the Internet has cut out the traditional physical ‘middle man’ or intermediary in these transactions, who has been replaced by a ‘virtual intermediary’. For example, users of illicit drugs no longer necessarily have to seek out dealers in person; instead, they can order the drugs of their choice on the Internet, expecting to have their purchase delivered to their door.

This new avenue of drug supply has the potential to grow exponentially, and brings with it new challenges for law enforcement in disrupting the supply of illicit goods.

The combination of globalisation and rapid technological development has had a profound effect on the new and emerging drug markets (the drug analogues and other novel substances markets) and on sophisticated organised fraud. The Internet is the key driver of the new and emerging drug markets, enabling entrepreneurial individuals, rather than traditional organised crime groups, to become significant players within these markets. Organised fraud can now target victims around the world from any location, with the delivery of scams via the Internet or via voice-over-Internet protocols, meaning that those behind these schemes can easily and cheaply reach increasingly large pools of possible victims.

The emergence of entrepreneurial individuals in some key illicit markets is challenging the traditional paradigms of organised crime dominance or control. Reporter: Nick McKenzieKERRY O'BRIEN: An Italian police operation to disrupt mafia drug smuggling to countries, including Australia, has been frustrated by a decision here not to extradite four Australians who are allegedly members of the mafia. The Italians are seeking the extraditions of the four who are allegedly prominent local members of organised crime. Arrest warrants for the four men were issued in Italy two years ago but so far, the Australian Government has made no move to extradite them because it says there's insufficient evidence. Italian investigators disagree. And according to some Australian crime experts, law enforcement agencies here have become so pre-occupied with the threat of terrorism that they've taken their eye off organised crime. Nick McKenzie reports.

JOHN BROOME, FORMER CHAIRMAN, NCA: There's absolutely no doubt drug trafficking in Australia still causes far more damage to far more Australians than all of the terrorist acts that have been contemplated, let alone carried out, in Australia in the last 10 years.

DAMIAN MARRETT, FORMER UNDERCOVER POLICE OFFICER: Terrorism and so forth has pretty much taken up all of the budget. So you're not going to get a lot of money thrown at something that isn't in the face of people causing great problems.

JOHN BROOME: The resources of the AFP, the resources of state police forces are now being largely directed towards the terrorist threat. Perceived or real, it's a response to a political assessment as much as to a law enforcement assessment.

NICK McKENZIE: In 2004 at a port in Calabria in southern Italy, a police investigation codenamed Operation Takeoff hit the jackpot. Police seized hundreds of kilograms of cocaine hidden in marble blocks but it was only a fraction of what the Calabrian mafia had hoped to send overseas. Italian authorities say one of the countries on the mafia's list was Australia.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO, ANTI-MAFIA PROSECUTOR: Because through interception, for example, we would learn that on day X, a representation of this Australian organisation would be arriving in Italy to conclude deals with the Italian organisation.

NICK McKENZIE: Australian police disrupted part of this cocaine smuggling business when they arrested Pietro Antonio Sarillo in Adelaide in 2000 and seized 317 kilograms of the drug. In 2004, the Italian-born Australian was sentenced to 20 years in prison. But despite the Sarillo bust, Italian authorities believe that more than 100 kilograms of cocaine worth millions of dollars had already found its way on to the Australian market. And now the Italians say they have identified four Australians who later conspired with the Calabrian mafia to import an additional 500 kilograms of cocaine. They want them extradited to face charges in Italy.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: We requested, through our offices, through the Public Prosecutor, the activation of international procedures of extradition.

NICK McKENZIE: As an anti-Mafia prosecutor, Dr Salvatore Curcio knows the stakes are high in his line of work. He rarely leaves his office without a bodyguard. The picturesque Calabrian scenery hides a grisly but well-documented history of violence, particularly towards those investigating the local mafia, known in Italy as the 'Ndrangheta and here in Australia as the Honoured Society. Dr Curcio doesn't move without good evidence and he's convinced he has that in the case of the Australians.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: So the trips that these men took to Italy were filmed, the telephone calls and conversations were intercepted, so we were able to supply the judge's office with proof, certain and irrefutable, that these people were involved in this international drug trafficking of cocaine.

NICK McKENZIE: Arrest warrants prepared by an Italian court provide detailed descriptions of their alleged criminal activity. Dr Curcio describes one in particular as a Mr Big of Australian mafia operations.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: That he represents a principle figure within the scope of this Australian offshoot of the Italian organisation is indisputable.

NICK McKENZIE: The Australian Federal Police conducted their own investigation into the four men, including surveillance of their movements. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions did not believe the AFP investigation provided enough evidence to charge the men. The Italians, though, are clearly more certain of their case.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: Because we were informed of the involvement of these people directly by their five voices, via, I repeat, telephone interception, also through surveillance services.

NICK McKENZIE: But two years after arrest warrants were issued by an Italian court, the four men are yet to face justice.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: Because our judge for preliminary investigations - by now, it is public knowledge because the documents have been registered for a year - has issued more provisions with regard to the Italian and Australian component.

NICK McKENZIE: A spokeswoman for the AFP said that mutual assistance requests for a matter for the Attorney-General's Department but a spokesman for the Justice Minister, Chris Ellison, said he could not comment on extradition matters.

JOHN BROOME: Certainly if these are requests intended to lead to extradition processes, then one would have assumed they would have been given some high degree of priority. I suspect, however, without knowing the details of particular cases, that this reflects in large part the priority that's being afforded to anti-terrorist activities above virtually everything else.

NICK McKENZIE: The 7.30 Report understands there is now a risk the AFP may close its file on the Australian men, a move that could impact on any extradition request.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: The 'Takeoff' investigation ascertained the existence, in fact, of solid links between the organisation dedicated to international drug trafficking in Calabria and one of its arms in Australian territory.

NICK McKENZIE: Questions about the mafia in Australia gained prominence in the 70s after the murder of Donald Mackay in Griffith. Similar questions were asked again in the 90s by the National Crime Authority, which concluded a local Honoured Society was more myth than reality. But former NCA chairman John Broome is now warning attention has shifted too far away from Italian organised crime.

JOHN BROOME: It's been the law enforcement agencies responding to what they believe the Government wants to hear, so proposals for enhanced anti-terrorism activity are being developed and presented to government and government has basically grabbed those with both hands.

NICK McKENZIE: Some who've risked their life to infiltrate the Mafia agree. Former undercover operative Damian Marrett posed as a drug dealer in the early 1990s. This surveillance video shows Marrett during a successful drug bust.

DAMIAN MARRETT: There's a mountain of intelligence out there to show that, yes, there is a structured Italian unit working here and are involved in organised crime.

NICK McKENZIE Damian Marrett also infiltrated a plan to smuggle drugs into Australia on a small plane, a story featured in his book, Undercover. The smugglers were closely connected to figures identified as Honoured Society members by Justice Woodward 25 years ago.

DAMIAN MARRETT: It's like any family - things are passed on down. People are brought up to learn their trade, the trade of their father. They've got reasons why they believe they're going to be successful and the whole thing of it is that a lot of these families have made a hell of a lot of money out of it.

NICK McKENZIE: The secretive but successful New South Wales Crime Commission also warned in 2004 that the Italian organised crime network has received relatively little law enforcement attention, yet continues to generate substantial wealth. Back in Italy, there are similar warnings. Dr Curcio says the Australians he wants to prosecute plan to launder millions of dollars in drug profits for the Calabrian mafia.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: It would be interesting to ascertain the possible investments carried out in Australia by the Italian organisation.

NICK McKENZIE: It's a network which according to Dr Curcio has helped the Honoured Society or the 'Ndrangheta become the leading Mafia group in Italy and to give it further power to extend its reach back overseas.

DR SALVATORE CURCIO: I believe, however, that this type of organisation is a type of business that never really stops.

A TEEN bashed with a tomahawk was fighting for his life last night as youths warned of a Cronulla-type gang explosion in Melbourne.

Sunshine Hospital was forced to call police and shut its emergency department as about 100 youths descended, angered by the brutal attack on their friend.

In another unprecedented escalation of gang violence, a Molotov cocktail was hurled on a suburban train last week.

More attacks were pledged as part of a bitter conflict between two of Melbourne's biggest gangs that has seen 10 youth stabbings.

Police are demanding measures to stem the growing scourge of youth gang activity.

They want a Youth Crime Task force established, new anti-assembly powers to break up loitering crowds of teens and portable knife scanners.

Shopping centres and rail operators were changing their operations to cope with the rising gang challenge.

Four men were charged with attempted murder and serious assaults last night over the savage attack on the Delahey youth, 17, on Friday.

The teenager's family was keeping a vigil after he and four friends were "pulverised" in the St Albans attack.

Their assailants -- one 16 -- used a tomahawk, baseball bats and hockey sticks in an orgy of violence destroying their car and hospitalising the five men.

One of the teens caught in the attack said the violent onslaught had been triggered by them being on someone else's turf.

The teen, who would not give his name, had facial bruising and injured ribs and described the attack as ruthless and against innocent victims.

As well as being territorial, he said the attack was carried out for fun.

Police, social workers and even gang members told the Sunday Herald Sun gang violence was flaring across Melbourne's suburbs.

The Police Association -- representing 11,000 officers -- said the youth gang crisis demanded a regional task force on youth crime and anti-assembly powers.

"They're under-18 and they're coming in from the outer suburbs and causing mayhem in the city and the inner suburbs," assistant secretary Bruce McKenzie said.

"This is happening. And we do know it's of considerable concern to our members."

The association was expected to lobby Premier John Brumby for anti-assembly powers to break up big groups of teens and expressed a desire for British-style portable walk-through metal scanners.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Emmett Dunne said operations in Noble Park and Springvale had successfully combated crime at railway stations and shopping centres.

"We're monitoring the situation over time. We're getting intelligence reports all the time," he said.

"Seventeen to 19 is a period of transition in people's lives and . . . they test the boundaries."

In an escalating stoush between two of the city's biggest gangs, an Arab coalition from Melbourne's north was seething over a rap song released by enemy gang South-East Boys, threatening "another Cronulla".

The song, Lullaby, derides the Dandenong gang's Arab enemies as "pussies" and threatens a local Cronulla-style race clash.

Gang members said the rivalry between the north and south gangs had already led to 10 stabbings.

"Give it tomorrow, give it a year. We will hit back 10 times harder," said Ronni, leader of northern gang ASAD or Arabian Soldiers Arab Defenders.

Gang members are aged 17 to 26 and brawl with machetes, bottles, poles, knuckle-dusters and knives.

The North-West Boys, who have a distinct double-fist handshake, are made up of gangs including ASAD, which has spread from Newport, and The Clan.

The Sunday Herald Sun met northern gang leaders on the turf of their blood rivals near Oakleigh station where a gang clash occurred last Saturday attracting more than a dozen police cars.

The North-West Boys said their opposing gang, based around Dandenong, was a mix of white "Aussie bogans", Sudanese, Afghans, Italians and Greeks.

"We were hunting them for almost seven hours," The Clan leader Hash said.

"If the South-East want war, then so be it."

The gangs have sophisticated fight strategies and youths are attacked if they stray into another gang's side of the city.

"Something in the future is going to happen to them," Ronni said.

Hash said they tried to isolate their activities so members of the public would not get hurt.

Spokeswoman Merline McGregor said Highpoint shopping centre -- the scene of recent gang conflicts -- was working with police and social workers to develop a code of conduct for young people.

"We undertake a number of initiatives to mitigate possible anti-social behaviour," she said.

Officially-tolerated "community gang stalking" of "targeted but innocent" Philadelphia-area citizens has gained national attention amid revelations that Bush administration legal opinions appears to have provided the rationale for torture, community gang stalking harassment, vandalism and surreptitious home entries.

Gang stalking, menacing with a motor vehicle, surreptitious home entries, vandalism of property and personal effects, and covert assault with hi-tech microwave radiation weapons have been unconstitutionally decriminalized in the Philadelphia area and throughout the nation under the convenient banner of the "war on terror"...

...as demonstrated by the Bush Justice Department "torture memos," which have been described as a blueprint for a police state. 

Bush administration officials renounced the memos just days before the end of their term -- but fact is, the programs and policies that these memos deigned to justify continue under President Obama.

The Bush torture memos, some still secret,  appear to have laid the groundwork for a repressive "extrajudicial punishment network" -- in effect, turning local police into secret agents acting on suspicions derived from "intelligence" that may have been supplied with ideological baggage attached.

Many innocent people have been "put on a list" by those who don't like their politics, their social activism, or their ethnic background. Persons slandered as "troublemakers, " "deviates," "mental defectives" or disloyal "dissidents" have been subject to years of persecution at the hands of their neighbors -- just as occurred in Nazi Germany in the years leading up to World War II and Hitler's "Final Solution."

(A former NSA analyst has revealed that journalists nationwide have been subject to 24/7 surveillance, a claim to which this reporter can attest).

A nationwide GPS satellite tracking network has been made available to "community gang stalkers" who hide behind federal- and county-funded volunteer organizations and public safety agencies such as fire departments and police auxiliaries.

These organizations provide taxpayer-funded vehicles and gasoline to a squad of hundreds of vigilante volunteers, who seem to delight in "swarming the target" when signal from a secreted GPS device planted in their vehicles shows up in the so-called "crown of evil" GPS video screen of the stalkers. 

Some stalkers cause auto accidents and attempt to provoke confrontations that will draw police attention. The apparent motive: to portray the persecuted as mentally unbalanced.

This vehicle stalking causes a public safety hazard as vigilante squads violate the civil and human rights of their prey -- many, if not most, of whom are upstanding citizens who were wrongly or maliciously targeted.

Victims say the gang stalkers also make surreptitious entry into their homes to vandalize property and personal effects, and to leave tell-tale signs that the privacy of their targets has been violated -- a form of psychological harassment known as "gaslighting" (after the classic Ingrid Bergman movie of the same name, in which an evil husband manipulates his wife's environment to make her think she is going crazy).

Every law enforcement agency in the nation is likely to know about the GPS-enabled stalking system and the community gang stalking --  what some insiders call "the torture matrix."  The Bush torture memos specifically cited anti-stalking laws as being exempt from enforcement when "terrorism" was suspected.

Portraying the "targets" as mentally unsound also appears to be the goal of what amounts to an American "slow-kill" genocide:  The covert assault of these "targeted individuals" with classified, hi-tech microwave radiation weapons and devices referred to by officialdom as supposedly non-lethal "directed energy weapons."

The benign nomenclature notwithstanding, these powerful microwave weapons can stum, injure, induce illness, and, depending on exposure levels, kill.  Victims say the weapons are being used on the "targets" to induce symptoms of mental illness and cognitive impairment -- in a campaign to have them declared mentally ill and thus "neutralized."

These are crimes against humanity, enabled by federal programs and policies that have co-opted and corrupted local law enforcement, which is dependent upon federal funding from the agencies that devised these "programs of personal destruction."

It is time for local authorities to reclaim their autonomy, and their respect for Constitutional rights. There is a new administration in Washington, one that has pledged to uphold the Constitution.

Philadelphia-area officials and law enforcement officers who renounce community gang stalking and prosecute those who have persecuted their neighbors will be praised as upholders of the Constitution and defenders of the rule of law.

Those who continue to enable the violation of civil and human rights may find themselves under scrutiny as the new team in Washington makes good on its pledge to restore American values and respect for the rights granted to all citizens under the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Gang Stalking Exposed: Tell-All Interview With Gang Stalking Leader Part 1 Of 4

Flash mobs. Community-based harassment groups. Perps. The culprits of gang stalking go by many different titles but they all have one singular goal: To make the life of the targeted individual or “TI” a living hell.

All manner of nefarious tactics are used to intimidate, control and ultimately ruin the black-listed victim. Microwave hearing, pubic theatre, voice to skull, vehicular harassment and synthetic telepathy are just a few methods implemented by these sadistic groups.

I have been following the phenomenon known as gang stalking since first hearing about it in early 2005. Initially I was sceptical after reviewing several gang stalking victim’s testimonials. I had them pegged as bored, mentally unstable people, overcome with the triviality of their existence. Desperate to feel “special” or that they have any use or interest to humanity. It all just seemed too far-fetched to believe.

While psychiatrist continue to claim these allegations are spun by the historonic and deranged, victims continue coming forward with new tales of sadistic psychological torture. One cannot help but wonder… Could this all be chalked up to mass hysteria? Or is there something more sinister at play?

Last week I was contacted through my personal email address by someone purporting to be a gang stalking leader. This person, who refused to reveal their name or any other information about themselves, said they had been working for an electronic harassment organization for the last 20 years.  They expressed interest in corresponding for an interview with National Report while writing behind an anonymous email address.

Still sceptical, I asked the “gang stalker” to prove his abilities by relaying my own intimate details back to me. I was shocked when they responded with my Social Security Number, previous addresses, my parents names, along with other more detailed information. The icing on the cake came when I reached the image attachment at the bottom only to find my own two eyes looking back at me from the computer screen. It was a photograph that had been taken of me without my knowledge or permission seemingly from months ago.

I was shaken, but ultimately convinced. I agreed to do the interview which was conducted via email over a period of two weeks. This ground breaking and informative account will soon be released in its entirety only on National Report. Stay tuned in.

I conducted the following interview with an individual purporting to be a veteran gang stalker. I detailed how our correspondence began in part one of the four part series. In it I explain why I feel confident putting my professional reputation on the line to publish this shocking account.

Our communications were relayed via email between the dates of 9-21-13 to 10-03-13. The messages have been edited slightly from their original format for easier readability. No other information has been omitted or knowingly falsified in the process.

JA: Hello and let me first thank you for reaching out and allowing National Report to publish your story. I know the TI community is well aware their own experiences with gang stalking but many still seem to be in the dark when it comes to the motivations of their perpetrators. I believe it’s best to start our interview by asking: What is the real incentive behind your psychological torment of American citizens?

PERP: There are as many different motivations as there are groups implementing electronic weapons. For me and the organization I work for, gang stalking stems from a desire to bring order to the world’s chaotic state. I’m an idealist. Common laws are not infallible and sometimes punishment goes un-served. We provide a public service which ensures these failures of justice are rectified.

JA: But these are innocent people you’re torturing… How are you able to justify such a thing? How do you determine they are criminals?

PERP: Well, Jane, that’s a very common misconception about what we do… So I am glad you asked. The organization I work for–specifically–are not out to harm any law-abiding citizens. Our only aim is to neutralize potential threats such as criminals who have escaped prosecution. Drug dealers, sex offenders, nasty folks who our flawed judicial system has been unable to convict.

JA: That is very hard for me to believe. Surely everyone who claims they’re a victim of organized stalking isn’t some hardened lawbreaker…

PERP: I cannot deny the existence of fringe groups who use  technologies similar to our own. Voice to skull microwave communicators. A few of the early model RFID implants. Items like these sometimes find their way onto the black market. It’s common knowledge but still begs the axiom:  If you have enough money you can purchase and do pretty much anything you want. Unauthorized individuals do obtain these electronic weapons to carry out their own personal agendas.  I–nor the organization I work for–engage in this sort of business in any capacity…

After the overwhelming amount of positive feedback I’ve received for the first two instalments of my interview with a gang stalker I’ve decided to extend the piece into a four part series instead of the originally intended trilogy.

Hundreds of TIs have contacted me since the first two articles went public and I’m doing my best to help them with whatever knowledge I may have on this dangerous and obscure subject. Writing these articles have shown me that gang stalking is a silent epidemic, not just in America but worldwide, with new victims coming forward each and everyday.

<NR>JA: Perpetrators have a reputation for being, at best, bullies with a God complex. At worst, they’re considered to be abominations motivated by pure evil. Victims of gang stalking insist that what you’re doing is unconstitutional, highly illegal and a gross violation of basic human rights. You don’t seem to view it this way. Can you elaborate on the justifications of your acts ?

Typically An Intricate Show Of Street Theatre Is Enough To Make One Question Their Sanity And Induce Agoraphobia In Your Average Person

PERP: We do not sign up for this job to receive accolades. Brownie points have never been my desire. We work in the shadows, a place between myth and reality. Because of this there are many “boogie man” tales… Rumors, if you will. The people we target, they are not nice individuals. These are people who have caused great harm to the world. Damage which they must be held accountable for by whatever means necessary.

JA: What are some of the methods and technologies your particular group uses to “Neutralize targets” as you say?

Perp: Targets fall under 4 different categories, descending in order of threat.

Level 4 targets are people we feel are not an immediate threat to themselves or others. We consider these TIs low priority. Typically we will ride around their home several times throughout the day. Follow them when they run mundane errands. We pursue them just enough to let them know something is happening, but not enough to let on what is truly going on.

Level 3 targets are a bit more involved. We might bug their home to collect information which we can use against them later. Conduct intricate street theatre episodes to make the person unsure about their reality. Typically a good show of street theatre is enough to induce agoraphobia.

Level 2 target status is reserved for people like drug dealers, tax evaders, insurances fraudsters. People who are using deceit to dismantle the infrastructure of society for their own selfish gains. These targets call for all the previous actions, with the inclusion of covertly warning friends, families and neighbors of the TI. We will send anonymous threatening messages to their phone, email and via other assorted means of communication.

We Abduct Them From Their Homes Using A Substance That Is Chemically Similar To Scapolamine

Level 1 TIs are immediate threats such as some domestic terrorists, murderers, sex offenders. In the instance we have a Level 1 we will generally pull out all the stops. We abduct them from their homes using a substance that is chemically similar to scapolamine. The victim of a dosing will remain able to function, but they will also be highly open to suggestion. Afterward amnesia blocks out any memories of their kidnapping.

The criminal is implanted with a small computer device behind the ears by one of our private doctors. It is a sort of chip that allows us to not only track the target but also gives our technicians a direct line into the persons mind. We can then direct thoughts, feelings, phrases… Even dreams.

While we have them in our custody an agent will go into the TIs home several install several advanced electronic devices in the walls, floorboards and ceiling. Once that’s completed we release them back into their natural surroundings but now not only do we have 24 hour surveillance of them, but they are now more easily controlled with the subdermally implanted technology.

This concludes part three of the interview with a gang stalker. I hope through these articles I’m able to bring some form of reassurance, insight or perspective to victims.

As I bring you the final instalment of my interview with a gang stalker, I would like to thank my readers for all of the wonderfully positive feedback I’ve received since first publishing this piece. It has been quite the overwhelming experience.

Before writing part one of my gang stalker interview I had no idea how widespread of a pandemic this issue had become. The messages I’ve received from the victims of perps have been a sobering eye openers to a crime that’s grown out of control and gone on for far too long.

Across the globe innocent civilians are being tortured in a silent war on sanity. The targets of these shadowy agencies endure 24/7 harassment which includes obscene phone calls, wiretapping, invasions of privacy, destruction of property, bewildering displays of street theatre and flash mobbing.

As these attacks continue the TI is gradually worn down mentally, their peace of mind eroded, leaving them with ailments such as clinical depression and in some cases fully inducing lunacy in individuals with no past history of mental health issues.

No one believes the Targeted Individual when they try to express what they’re going through. This is the catch 22 of the gang stalker’s assault: To make the target believe they are insane and to make them seem mentally ill when they speak out against their abuse/abusers.

In the previous three accounts we covered the perpetrator’s motivations, how their targets are chosen as well as some of the technologies that are being used against victims. In this final instalment I queried the gang stalker on their goals, home life and how they came into this line of work.

“Any Legitimate Gang Stalking Organization That You Encounter Is Somehow Backed By A Facet Of The Government.”

JA: Many targets ask the question “what do the perps want from me?” Can you tell us more about what the final aim of gang stalking is?

PERP: To nullify threats against American society through methods such as gas lighting, electronic harassment and inducing synthetic mental illness. We attempt to either drive the target insane or push them to commit acts that will allow us to legitimately arrest and prosecute them in an American court of law. We want to get these individuals off the streets and into the penal system where they belong.

JA: There are lots of speculations regarding how one becomes a gang stalker. What did you do initially to enter into this line of work?

PERP: Again, that largely depends on who you work for. We make a concerted effort to find individuals we feel have the correct “personality type” for the job. There are various avenues through which we find our employees. The military, police, certain religious sects, web forums. It takes all kinds, as they say, and our line of work is both demanding and all encompassing.

When I was younger gentleman I worked as a private detective. I was exceptionally good at it too. After cracking one particular case I was approached by the company and offered a position. As it turns out the case I had worked on was a test put forward by the organization as a form of recruitment.

JA: Do your friends and family know about your work? If so what do they think about it?

PERP: They do not. It would be far too messy to explain the whats and whys. Also the company largely frowns on it unless said family members also work for the company. I have a wife and two kids and they believe I’m the general manager of a high end hotel. There’s really no need for them to think otherwise. The only people I truly consider to be “friends” are other perps whom I work with…

JA:What are the legal repercussions? Has anyone ever been arrested and tried for gang stalking

PERP:Any legitimate gang stalking organization that you encounter is somehow backed by a facet of the government. That could be on a local level and even occasionally on a federal one. Basically what I am trying to communicate is that no one will ever stand trial or be punished for the crime of gang stalking because some of the same people signing the warrants and issuing the judgements are the ones who handed the target over to us in the first place.

Those technicalities aside, we are quite adept at cleaning up after ourselves. There are reasons no one has been able to provide concrete evidence of having been a victim of electronic harassment or organized stalking.

JA: Well I certainly appreciate your honesty during this interview. Do you have any departing thoughts for Targeted Individuals who may be reading this?

PERP: Yes, I do actually. We are coming for you. We know what you have done and there is no place you can hide from us. Justice will be served upon you one way or another.

That certainly cleared up a lot of the questions I had. It’s not easy for me to swallow the notion that anyone who’s reported being a victim of gang stalking are dangerous criminals. Many of the people I have heard from personally I don’t believe to be dubious or diabolical in nature. None what-so-ever.

Ultimately the interview opened up more questions than it did to answer them. Was this a legitimate gang stalker I spoke with? And if so, were being completely truthful? No one can ever completely know, and that’s the crux from which gang stalkers derive their power. anonymity. Mystery. Confusion. It’s Chinese water torture directed at the persons psyche. It’s all the little things piling up until minor annoyances engulf your life. For these reasons I fear gang stalking will continue to be a crime perpetuated on citizens both innocent and guilty for a much longer time than we had hoped.

Failing to understand the nature of an understanding God

Christian leader Danny Nalliah's rantings about the bushfires are wrong.

CONTROVERSIAL Christian leader Danny Nalliah says the Victorian bushfires are a punishment for decriminalising abortion. Danny Nalliah is wildly wrong. He is wrong as a theologian, a thinker and a pastor, and has shocked and appalled both the mainstream community and the vast majority of his fellow Christians. They feel he has brought the name of Christ into disrepute.

At a time like this, the role of religion is not explanation; it is consolation. It is to seek to offer comfort and hope, a way of going on.

Uniting Church of Australia president Gregor Henderson speaks for most in saying Nalliah's claim is ludicrous, abhorrent and misunderstands the nature of God.

Henderson says: "God is not punishing the people of Victoria, so many of whom lost their lives, and so many more of whom are working day and night to fight fires, support the victims and provide food, clothing and shelter. God is, in fact, there with the people, in the middle of their suffering; God is made known through the love that is extended to those most in need."

Nalliah — senior pastor of Catch the Fire Ministries, a man who has enjoyed the support of former prime minister John Howard and treasurer Peter Costello — is a Pentecostal from the apocalyptic and ecstatic end of Christianity who believes God still speaks in dreams and prophecies.

He had a dream on October 21 in which Victoria was ablaze. He says he awoke, and the Spirit of God told him God had removed his protection, Victoria would be destroyed, and Nalliah should call God's people to repent and pray. He published this on his website in November.

Whether God speaks in dreams, I cannot say. The first two verses of the New Testament book of Hebrews strongly suggest otherwise (that in the past God spoke in various ways but now has spoken by his son). I can say the Bible refutes the idea that suffering is God's punishment. In the Gospel of Luke, for example, Jesus is asked exactly this question of two groups of people who died, and replies: "Do you think they were worse sinners? I tell you, no."

Another key text is the Old Testament book of Job, probably the oldest in the Bible, which ponders suffering. The answer Job is given is that there is no answer at least, not one accessible to humans; we can only endure. God rebukes Job's comforters for offering false answers.

This might lead pastors who respect the Scripture, as Nalliah says he does, to be wary about offering explanations on behalf of God. His explanation might readily be ignored, except that something like it so often emerges at times of disaster (think hurricane Katrina and the gay mardi gras in New Orleans).

It is simply colossal arrogance to presume to speak for God in this way. To understand God fully, one would have to be God his thoughts are not our thoughts, the prophet Isaiah says.

Do such Christians really believe God punishes the innocent to teach the guilty? Jeremiah contradicted that idea more than 2500 years ago. Meanwhile, there is another lesson from Job that impertinent pastors could ponder: "Man is born to trouble, as surely as the sparks fly upward."

I don't have the temerity to suggest any spiritual explanation for the bushfires, but there are certainly spiritual lessons not least, what a gift life is and how precious we are to each other.

At times like this I turn to perhaps my favourite Bible verse, Romans 8:28: "In all things, God works for the good of those who love him." How and why, I cannot know it is a matter of faith and I know that for many this will bring no consolation. But I also know that such thoughts have provided comfort through millennia of suffering.

As a young Christian exploring the denominations, I met many Pentecostals who claimed to prophesy ( "Thus saith the Lord ") and was struck by how unfailingly God's word through them precisely mirrored their own obsessions.

I don't doubt Danny Nalliah is sincerely disturbed by the Victorian abortion law. I don't even doubt he means well. I do very much doubt that his vision is from God.

Danny Nalliah’s Rainbow Family and the People’s Temple

Danny Nalliah, pastor of the Catch the Fire Ministries and leader of the Rise Up Australia Party (RUAP), presents a picture of pathology amidst the decaying rot of the multiracial society.

Into our Australian crisis has come a supposed man of God, a Sri Lankan, who says that he is “Australian” and “black” and that he seeks to create a true Australian identity on the basis of a grand project of multiracial assimilation. He has even held a meeting on June 22 to accept unto his assembly the “guilt” of white Australians (he uses the term “Anglo Saxons”) for the historical ‘mistreatment’ of the Aborigines. He has ‘healed’ Australia and set that matter aright. He is a leader to lead this new Australia. His effrontery knows no bounds.

But he is best known as an ‘anti Islamic’ activist and in that guise he has reached national prominence, ‘warning’ us all of the dangers – sometimes correctly stated – that Islam represents on Australian soil. That is his ticket to be heard. Nalliah seeks the unity of all regardless of race or origin – against Islam.

In that regard, he echoes the quiet sub text of the Liberal Party which has been running that line for a decade or so. It takes the public eye off the overall danger of immigration from all non European sources and certainly away from the rise of the Chinese superpower and its plans to colonize Australia.

Ironically, it was Scott Morrison, Liberal immigration spokesman, who was caught out a few years back in a confidential memo suggesting the Libs push a little ‘anti Islam’ to garner votes and allay public fears at the immigration program generally.

In the shadow of the Liberal Party, the pipsqueak seeks to roar.

Does History Repeat?

History repeats, first as tragedy second as farce. But then others say, that those who don’t learn from the lessons of history are bound to repeat them. We are drawn by the incredible similarities between Nalliah and mass killer Jim Jones – as we shall explain.

Jim Jones lived inside his mind in the “end times’ as prophesised in the Bible. So does Nalliah too – and with a few twists besides.

We think the anti Islamist Nalliah will not like this analogy, but he is styling himself like the secret Imam of Islam, a saviour yet to be recognized, a man ready to act to bring on the end times. In Islam, this hidden imam is helped by Jesus whom God returns to earth as an emissary and agent of holy war. Of course too, this theme of a militancy designed to actually precipitate the end times, to force God’s hand, also appears in various heresies of Christianity. It is a tangled mix that has often produced an array of fakers – and death. And as you shall read, Nalliah makes the claim to be the saviour.

To observe the Jones / Nalliah similarity is to be warned.

Pathology of a Liar

Nalliah is a self-proclaimed pastor and doctor. His ministership was honorary as is his doctorate. Indeed, the doctorate comes from a degree factory and is of no intellectual value. No substance is the theme. Now anyone may preach a faith and say he labours for God. It is a matter of whether they proclaim titles they have not earned. So he was no minister and no doctor.

Nalliah makes many claims, like when he said he had provided trucks of support materials to the victims of Victoria’s bushfires a few years back and added that his help was extensive. It’s just that no one saw it.

Nalliah says that people attending his services register gold dust on the hands, an old scam practised in the United States decades ago.

Nalliah has said that he has witnessed the healing of blind, deaf and crippled people at his prayer sessions and said that a dead girl was resurrected also. He asserts the power of belief over reason, a curious stand for one who would criticise Islam.

Nalliah also says he has resurrected others, including a woman on a bus in Israel. We note that Jesus Christ only performed resurrection twice – on Lazarus and himself. One must wonder where Nalliah has acquired the theological power to do the feat which Jesus did? Any Christian would call such a claim – utter blasphemy. But in a church inspired only by pure faith, such a claim becomes ‘normal’. It places the members of the church on a slippery path where they are surrounded by miracles. This is cultism.

Nalliah has claimed that he was instrumental in securing the release of 31 Christians arrested in Saudi Arabia in 1998 and that his work influenced the highest levels in the US government when President Clinton demanded the release of these prisoners. This is nonsense. It did not happen.

Nalliah also tells many stories of his time in Saudi Arabia and has built himself up as an almost guerrilla fighter for Christianity behind ‘enemy lines’. No proof of it exists.

It is obvious that Nalliah is building a cult and cults are dangerous machines.

Pathology of a Con Man

‘Catch the Fire Ministries‘ must be all about money and getting lots of it.

There are requests for money to persuade worried girls not to terminate their unplanned pregnancies. There is a demand for the odd million or two for the new church building in Hallam near outer-ethnic Dandenong, Victoria.

There are always requests for money for Sri Lankan projects (whatever they may be) and that country seems to be a key financial fixation. Of course, Nalliah is Sri Lankan.

Nalliah needs money for Bibles; he needs money for Chinese Christian activism. Money. Money.

Who holds all the money? Who controls it? How is Nalliah paid and what is he paid? What is reasonably clear is that Nalliah has acquired a certain lifestyle paid for by the faithful. It is time this church was audited thoroughly.

Lunacy and Blasphemy

We would adapt some material from a blogsite written by Nalliah.

The Catch The Fire Ministeries has said for years that a certain Smith Wigglesworth prophesied about Australia’s future “mighty revival” and how God would use Australia to impact the nations.

Some years ago, Nalliah ministered at the Assembly Of God church in Sydney, where Pastor Norm Armstrong was formally the Senior Pastor. Some years ago, Nalliah said he had an amazing experience there, which he eventually felt it was the time to share – how bloody convenient!

It was this supposed experience that establishes Nalliah as a blasphemer and a psychotic liar and fantasiser.

The tale goes that as Pastor Armstrong got up to introduce Nalliah he supposedly came under a “great anointing of the Holy Spirit”, and started sharing about what happened when he was a young boy.

Armstrong claimed that when he was only a very young boy, Smith Wigglesworth, a Pentecostal preacher, came to minister in his home. The house was so packed with people that the only place left for him was the toilet seat.

Suddenly, Smith stopped preaching and told Armstrong to come out of the toilet. Then he laid hands on him and started at prophesy. He said, “Australia, you have been chosen by God for a great move of the Holy Spirit. This move of God will be the greatest ever known in mankind’s history and will start towards the end of the 20th century and move into the 21st century.

This move of God will start a great revival in Australia, spread throughout the whole world and usher in the second coming of Jesus. This will be the final revival before the coming of the Lord. God will raise up a man in Australia who will lead this move of God under the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

This man will bow down to no one other than God. He will have tremendous favour in the nation of Australia. My son, my (Smith Wigglesworth) eyes will not see this man, but you (Norm Armstrong) will meet this man before you go to be with the Lord. Now I will lay hands on you and pass on the mantle of God for this great mission.

When you see this man, place your hands on him and prepare him for this mission and pass on this mantle.” Then Nalliah says that Armstrong turned and looked at Nalliah and said, “You are that man I have been waiting for so many years, come here.”

Nalliah stated, “I was absolutely shocked when Pastor Norm called me out. I fell on my knees and started sobbing and crying in the presence of God as His presence was so amazing.”Then Armstrong laid hands on Nalliah “and passed on the mantle as instructed by Smith Wigglesworth. He then lifted his hands up to heaven and said, “I am now ready to come home.” After Armstrong died Nalliah said :”I pray, Lord please help me to fulfil this great commission.

I am a simple donkey for Jesus. I am so happy to carry Him wherever He wants to go. Please pray for me and my family that we will stay humble, but bold in the name of Jesus for our nation Australia and the nations of the world.”

It should be noted that many madmen have claimed over the centuries to be the one who would usher in the Millennium. Try the loonies of the Munster Commune (1525) or the various Fifth Monarchy Men types of England’s Cromwell period.

This bloke goes even further and seems to place himself on the same level as Jesus Christ. This self-description changes the mission of Danny Nalliah from purely a religious one to something far more extensive and he intervenes in the world of flesh. He is both religious teacher and earthly (political) activist.

So similar is he to radical Islamism that we can no understand his preoccupation with Islam. It seems the Islamist loonies are intervening on his turf.

But so much of Nalliah has been seen before in mass killer Jim Jones. Let’s see.

Jim Jones’s Rainbow Family and People’s Temple

One thirsty day In Guyana in 1978, American cult leader Jim Jones induced a mass suicide of his followers by having them consume a poisoned cordial.

This act was one related to the end times. On this occasion, he took life away for his ‘ends’. Like Nalliah, he had also claimed to resurrect life.

Jones once said of a resurrected girl:

“You’ll have to understand – she was given up to die; they said she’d never be able to move again….Such experiences are not at all uncommon to us. That’s the 43rd time this has happened. I just said: ‘I love you, God loves you, “come back to us.’ The registered nurses around her said it was so.”

These nurses were neither introduced, nor even identified.

Jones also raised people “black” and said he was a black cult leader with access to special powers given by God.

Nallaih is also a “black fellow” and performs this miracle. And they share the end times idea. It is a different version: for Jones it was impending nuclear catastrophe and for Nalliah it may be a crisis that surrounds his beloved Israel, a particular view that appears in Christian Zionism and some versions of Pentecostalism. Events in modern Israel are held to suggest the end of the world.

One writer said:

“Jones said that the world would end on July 16, 1967, and encouraged the congregation here to pool their money and follow him to California – where he promised they would find a place where only they would be safe from this impending disaster.”

Ultimately, Jones bought land in South America after being ‘found out’ in California.

In Nalliah’s world view, his homeland of Sri Lanka is important in his work. If Nalliah is the last prophet who will usher in the coming of the Lord, might he go there and relocate a part of his flock? Are his works there part of the preparations?

Jim Jones used many tricks. It was revealed in a contemporary account that he:

“… uses people to visit potential church members, noting anything personal in the house, like addresses on letters, types of medicine in the medicine cabinet, or pictures of relatives. Then, when they show up in church, he tells them things about their ailments and the kinds of pills they take.”

When asked to comment on this charge, one Jones’ follower explained:

“I don’t remember anything like this. I believe Jim’s gift is authentic – or as he said in his sermon yesterday, he has paranormal gifts.”

Nalliah who appears to have paranormal powers to interpret God also uses techniques like Jones’s internal methods of mind control.

Organized religious instruction combined with sleep deprivation, means that people will do the strangest of things! Sleep deprivation is how an enemy breaks down prisoners of war or spy agencies conduct interrogations. Sleep deprivation is why new parents lose patience with newborns. It’s how Jim Jones controlled all those in Jonestown. Nalliah’s all night prayer sessions till 6am might be held to be milder, but similar, in form.

Sleep deprivation also allows for subtle brainwashing. This is cultic conduct that can lead – anywhere.

For Jones, his Christianity was a universalist “rainbow” vision of all humanity living together in perfect peace. Nalliah’s vision is a multiethnic Australia living together in a single identity called Australian. Different, but linked to the dominant fantasy. In Nahallia’s case, the vision of Australia is linked to the great mission bestowed upon him to realize God’s work here. This is a charged atmosphere of cultic devotion.

Jones’s People’s Temple

The Jim Jones People’s Temple in San Francisco clawed its way to influence by the clever political activism of its leader. Jones made himself useful to politicians and built their campaigns.

Many thought he was a remarkable and “spiritual” figure. Jones was known as the suave if slightly sinister leader of Peoples Temple, a flock of perhaps 8,000 people, mostly poor and mostly black, who appeared to do everything Jones told them to do. It was a great pool of campaign labour.

The con job went as high as Rosalyn Carter wife of a US President. But there were many warning signs that were ignored – defectors alleging irregularities and various criminal incidents. With willing workers, Jones made himself the perfect gift for the liberal machine of U.S. Representatives Phillip and John Burton, Assemblyman Willie Brown and Mayor George Moscone, which was trying to consolidate its hold on San Francisco politics.

So far, Nalliah’s organisation has no criminal conduct around it. However, it has the alliances with anti Islamic (sic) groups which provide it with credibility. Rumours suggest that the Australian Christians and the Christian Democratic Party have dealt with Nalliah and small Christian Zionist groups see him as a leader of note.

It is the Christian ‘Right’ that gives Nalliah his ‘in’ to Australian politics and he appears as the perfect crusader. His campaign against mosques in Victoria and his fervent propaganda for Israel are all ‘useful’ to our politicians who place us squarely in the turmoil of the Middle East – in Israel’s service.

The Reverend Lester Kinsolving managed a major investigation into Jones in the 1970’s. Much was published.

A reporter won the confidence of 10 temple defectors, who poured out their story to him. He eventually collaborated with writer Phil Tracy, and they sold their story to New West magazine, which published the piece in August 1977.

The article detailed beatings and fake “cancer healings” and reported that the temple had forced members to turn over millions from savings accounts and the sale of their homes. The piece became the catalyst for Jones’s flight to Guyana.

Other publications began to join the fray, notably the San Francisco Examiner, which assigned Reiterman, Jacobs, Nancy Dooley and other reporters to investigate Jones’ operations. Tough-minded reporting dogged Jones during the winter of 1977 – 1978.

In June 1978, one month after escaping from Jonestown, Temple defector Deborah Layton went public in a San Francisco Chronicle interview and gave a stark description of life at the Temple’s Guyana stronghold.

Other local media, as well as TV and radio stations, continued to slither beneath their news desks as over the thought of standing up to Jim Jones. Some of them, like the late, famed Chronicle columnist Herb Caine, in spite of the Temple revelations, unforgivably promoted the lethal cult, all the way up to the slaughter in 1978. Nalliah’s allies similarly promote him.

For his public stands, Nalliah alleges all sorts of harassments, but there is no objective proof of any of it. He holds himself out as a man in constant danger from Islamist fanatics who sadly enough exist in our multicultural society.

Likewise, Jones received considerable criticism whilst in Indiana for his racial-integrationist views. White-owned businesses and locals were critical of him.

A swastika was placed on the Temple, a stick of dynamite was left in a Temple coal pile, and a dead cat was thrown at Jones’s house after a threatening phone call. Other incidents occurred, though some suspected that Jones himself may have been involved in at least some of them.

Self promotion and self-glorification are common traits. All the threats are just too convenient.

The Way to Jonestown II and the Apocalypse

Given Nalliah’s modus operandi, we must conclude that he has based his strategies on Jim Jones, as it lines up too well to be ‘coincidence’. Fakers always copy. And why not? As self proclaimed men of God and men of the apocalypse, they disguise their fraud with the intensity of conviction.

Perhaps when Australia is supposedly overtaken by Islam, Nalliah will need to move his followers to Sr Lanka, to his land there (the Save Sri Lanka compound?) – perhaps a prophesy soon to be announced? Perhaps a dream yet to come? as with the Victorian bushfires which he was told were God’s wrath? Will it be that Australia has allowed Islam to take the path of becoming the dominant culture God will tell Nalliah in a dream to take his people to Sri Lanka? With around half Nalliah’s followers non European, it truly is the rainbow family model of Jones.

Nalliah talks of his great love for everyone. He has stories about helping some Muslim women stranded in the rain with a flat tyre. He carries their luggage through airports. And in the same soft voice of love he tells again how he can’t trust any of them to tell the truth.

What set Nalliah on this path of bringing down Islam and official multiculturalism? He tells the story of how, in 1983 in Sri Lanka, when the Tamils began their futile war of liberation against the dominant Sinhalese, mobs of the latter went on an ”ethnic-cleansing” riot against the Tamils. Nalliah’s family were Tamils. At the age of 20, newly turned to Christ, he came home to find his house surrounded by men carrying cans of petrol, swords, clubs and car tyres. They were calling for Nalliah’s parents to come out of the house.

Nalliah had that day, on his way home, seen 18 people set on fire. He says he immediately prayed to God and, soon after, a Buddhist-Sinhalese woman appeared and threw herself in front of the mob. She said the Nalliahs were charitable people and demanded that they be left alone. The mob wandered off. This was Nalliah’s first miracle.

Can we believe this wild tale?

”The British left in 1948. My father says within six years the government had split everyone up into their ethnic groups. It was a terrible mistake. Ethnic ghettos are poison.”

The little man now wants to merge Buddhism and Hinduism.

In 1996, he says he was working for an underground Christian church in Saudi Arabia, smuggling Bibles into the country – a crime, he says, that was punishable by imprisonment, flogging or even beheading. One night 20 soldiers “gave the dreaded knock on the door”. There were 400 Bibles stacked on his lounge room floor. His wife and children were sleeping in their beds. Calling on God, he says he confused the soldiers minds with prayer – such that they forgot why they were there – and they left soon after. This, too, was a miracle.

At the Rise Up Australia Party launch, he reduced this story to one line:

“In Saudi Arabia, my wife was nearly raped and killed.”

While his personal history is a matter of awe for his followers, it’s the claim to supernaturalism that many think gives Nalliah his authority. It is cultism.

In 2010, The Age reported that Nalliah had claimed he raised a Wagga woman named Diana Shield from the dead. They had been on a bus tour of Israel. The claim was supported by a Christian doctor, anaesthetist Murray James-Wallace, who had failed to revive the woman. Instead of a blocked artery, Nalliah believed the devil was the problem. He called out: “In the name of Jesus, life return! Satan, you have no right to take this life on tour. Diana, come back, in Jesus’ name!” And she did – he says. We await the official Vatican inquiry into this miracle – or would they assess it prima facie as the usual cultic mythology?

Nalliah loosely chronicles other apparent resurrections and demon-castings in his self-published memoir Worship Under the Sword, about his conversion to Christianity and his mission work in Saudi Arabia.

Such a character cannot but live in delusion. Whatever be his political utility he is just not of the corporeal world. And we don’t mean that as a compliment.

A Useful Satellite Of the Liberal Party

The Rise Up Australia Party will serve over time to rope in some people who will take its politics seriously and not see it as an extension of a Pentecostal church. In that vein, these people are ripe for exploitation. In the new hyper-globalist capitalism that is coming after the Liberals take government soon, this ‘party’ will be useful as a satellite. We have already suggested how. They will whip up public concern at a particular problem whilst keeping the public eye off the bigger danger.

Schools may come under Government pressure to teach students more about the world's religions and cultures after an international meeting chaired by Prime Minister Helen Clark in Auckland yesterday.

The closed-door meeting of 69 hand-picked opinion leaders from 22 mainly Asian and Pacific countries followed up a United Nations initiative called the "Alliance of Civilisations" - a deliberate counter to American writer Samuel Huntington's 1996 prediction of a coming "clash of civilisations".

Helen Clark said the initiative's goal was to "embrace diversity".

"Embracing diversity is the most effective means we have for dampening the embers which, when ignited, lead to intolerance, fanaticism and terrorism."

She told the Herald the meeting would challenge everyone to go home and take up recommendations such as ensuring that children learn about the world's religions.

"To what extent, for example, does our education system really enable people to get a better understanding of diversity, civilisations, cultures and faiths?" she asked.

"It's probably actually a lesson not to focus too much on your own society and country. We are educating citizens for the world and need to understand each other, recognising that with the level of specialisation in our education system a lot of people really never look at these issues beyond the fourth form when social studies phases out."

An Indonesian Muslim leader, Dr Azyumardi Azra, said he hoped the initiative would lead to more educational and cultural exchanges between mainly Christian countries such as New Zealand and mainly Muslim countries such as Indonesia, which has the world's biggest Muslim population.

"I think New Zealand can play a good role in mediation between civilisations that have been in contention for the last few years, especially after September 11, 2001," he said.

But the "mediating" role of both New Zealand and Indonesia is opposed by radical groups in both countries - Islamic extremists in Indonesia, and in New Zealand the Destiny Church and other Christian fundamentalists who plan to protest outside an Asia-Pacific interfaith dialogue at Waitangi next week.

Just as Destiny and other fundamentalists argue that New Zealand is still "a Christian country", and object to a clause that this country has no "state religion", their Muslim equivalents in Indonesia want that country to adopt Islamic, or sharia, law.

"There are always radical or literal-minded people within any religion," Dr Azra said. "We have it among Muslims, we have it among Christians, and among Hindus and Buddhists.

"But we should not exaggerate their influence or their role because the majority of Indonesians are moderate, particularly in Indonesia."

Dr Azra, who is editor-in-chief of Studia Islamika: Indonesian Journal for Islamic Studies, said men and women prayed together in Indonesian mosques and were regarded as equal.

"In the Middle East there are a lot of restrictions for women, but it's more cultural rather than Islam itself," he said.

Islamic terrorism there also grew out of local conditions such as poverty and the Palestine-Israel conflict, rather than from Islamic teaching.

"The fundamental core of Islamic teaching is to do with the term 'Islam', which means 'peace'," Dr Azra said.

"Muslims should spread peace in the world, they should be in peace in their minds and in peace with their neighbours.

"Of course there will be differences and there are conflicts because we are involved in human relations, but all of those conflicts should be involved in a peaceful manner."

He said Indonesian women were increasingly wearing the hijab (headscarf) - even those who were not Muslim.

"They feel comfortable to wear the hijab, but they do not vote for Islamic parties," he said. "Islamic parties managed only 14 per cent of the vote at the last election in 2004."

Islamic schools (madrassah) were also increasingly popular, now attracting 30 per cent of all schoolchildren. Dr Azra said this was a popular reaction against globalisation and the breakdown of traditional society.

The leader of Destiny Church, Brian Tamaki, who not long ago anointed himself bishop of the church he founded, has now proclaimed himself the church’s “spiritual father” and designated the male members of the church as “spiritual sons”.

At a special service during the church’s annual conference in Auckland at the weekend, about 700 male members of the church swore a “covenant oath” of loyalty and obedience to Mr Tamaki and were given a “covenant ring” to wear on their right hands.

Destiny Church. Cult. With the very unbiblical swearing of an oath of loyalty to Senior Pastor/Bishop Brian Tamaki at Labour Weekend 2009 (the oath was written by Richard Lewis) there is now no doubt that Destiny Church is a cult. This is not something that has happened suddenly; it's been shaping up for many years, with (for example) Cultwatch labelling them an emerging cult in a television item in October 2004, and in December 2010 reclassifying them as a cult. This was reported in the NZ Herald in February 2011, and columnist Garth George highlighted it at the same time. This 2009 report from a former member:

I used to be a member of Destiny Church but I left over 5 years ago when Tamaki said he was the spiritual father, the shepherd (and that his sheep hear his voice) and the significant voice (where we were not permitted to listen to Radio Rhema or attend any other Christian ministry - this was considered "spiritual adultery") of the church. That sounded like father, son and holy spirit to me - the Bible says people like this will come, and that they carry an anti-christ message.

Update June 2012: Brian Tamaki and Destiny Church appeared in an item on TV3's Campbell Live. There are signs that Destiny Church is becoming a worsening cult, including the claim that Destiny members are the firstborn and that they are above other Christians. Brian Tamaki wants all Destiny members from around New Zealand to come to his new City of God he will be building in Wiri, Auckland, which seems directly opposed to Jesus Christ in Mark 16:15 saying "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

It looked as if it was raining money at Auckland's Destiny Church on Sunday.

Photos tweeted by church leader Bishop Brian Tamaki showed many high-denomination bills on the floor.

The photos, one which Bishop Tamaki captioned: "A Sweet-Smelling Fragrance that is Acceptable to God (Phil 4:15-19). My God shall Supply all your need," drew widespread criticism on social media.

Another photo was accompanied by the text: "The main stage at Destiny Church Auckland ... this morning ... littered with 10,000s of $100 & $50 bills ... 'Attitude'."

The church, which is led by Mr Tamaki and his pastor wife Hannah, has hit headlines in the past for financial expectations placed on its members.

According to ex-congregation members, families were pressured to give "love offerings" and other cash donations above the expected tithe.

However, the church has denied this and said none of its members were forced to tithe.

Mr and Mrs Tamaki have also defended their reputations in the past, following publicity around their lifestyle.

Last year, Mrs Tamaki - who owned several homes, drove a black Audi station wagon and had a $90,000 diamond ring, rejected claims she led an extravagant lifestyle.

"What is wealth? I don't have a lot of money in the bank but to me success is inspiring other people," she said.

Last month, it also emerged the church's tax-exempt status was under the microscope after it was issued with overdue notices for the late filing of annual returns for 14 Destiny-affiliated charities.

Six of these charities, which received a combined $5.5 million in donations in the most recent returns, are more than a year overdue in filing statements with the public charities register.

When contacted by the Herald about the photos Mr Tamaki tweeted, a spokeswoman for the church said the organisation had "no comment".

Destiny's $6 million windfall

DESTINY CHURCH-affiliated charities received nearly $6million in donations in the last year after self-appointed Bishop Brian Tamaki demanded churchgoers give generously for the so-called “City of God”.

Destiny's finances are back in the spotlight after Tamaki last weekend implored his parishioners to shower the stage with high-denomination bills during a church service, boosting church coffers by $100,000.

He later tweeted: “A Sweet-Smelling Fragrance that is Acceptable to God (Phil 4:15-19). My God shall supply all your need”.

A Herald on Sunday analysis of Destiny's latest charity statements show its 14 charities received $5.75m in donations in the 2013-14 year, up from $4,610,023 the previous year.

The figures are in financial reports to the Department of Internal Affairs Charities Service. The charities include individual churches, the Destiny School, social services and housing organisations, and receive hundreds of thousand of dollars annually in Government grants.

The rise in donations follows several years of declines in charitable donations to the church. When unveiling plans for Destiny's “City of God” in Manukau in 2012, Tamaki said: “I don't care what the media say. I don't care what your relatives say. I don't care what the world says. Nobody should be not tithing.”

Charity deed papers show Tamaki has been removed as a trustee from all of the church's charities, but retains “absolute power of veto of any decision made by the Trust Board” over the Destiny Church Auckland Trust, which received more than $2m in donations last year — the highest for any of the charities. Hannah Tamaki is a trustee of 11 of the charities. The Destiny charity statements were uploaded to the Charities Service register in October, after the Herald on Sunday revealed the 14 charities were overdue in filing their returns, in some cases by more than a year.

Emails released under the Official Information Act show Internal Affairs issued a “please explain” to Destiny after Herald on Sunday inquiries about the late-filing charities.

The Tamakis have refused to release a more detailed breakdown of where the charities' money is spent, or how much they are paid in salaries. They have been criticised for their lavish lifestyles, enjoying overseas trips travelling business class, buying expensive cars and jewellery, but say how much they are paid by the church is their business.

Destiny Church spokeswoman Anne Williamson said: “The church has experienced a steady growth in membership since our move to 25 Druces Road, and that is reflected in our donations.” The church's financials were available to the “giving community of Destiny Church”, but they would not be posting details of staff wages to “others”.

Destiny also receives more than $1m a year in taxpayer funding for its school and social services.

Its trust Te Roto Taone Nui Trust, which provides housing, received $507,158, in Government funding, up from $392,460 the previous year. And the school received a Ministry of Education grant of $269,179, up from $266,400.

Your Destiny is to pay and pay

FOR Hannah Tamaki it must have been the week from — you'll pardon the expression — hell. First, her husband, Bishop Brian, receives a set of orders direct from God in his avatar as the Holy Spirit, telling him to instruct his parishioners to take bills in large denominations and place them on the stage during a Destiny Church service. Because this is the sort of thing God thinks about all the time.

Hannah may have tried to discourage the bishop but from what I hear, Destiny Church hews closely to Ephesians 5:23 — “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.”

Anyway, as if that wasn't enough for her to deal with, doesn't the big lummox go and post photos of the event on Twitter, which quickly alerts the world to the fact that Brian Tamaki does one mean Scrooge McDuck impression, even if he does stop just short of actually diving into the money.

A social media-driven firestorm erupts and what does the Bishop do? He goes pig hunting with the builders. And guess who's left to front the media?

That's right. Hannah has to try to explain to the likes of TV3's John Campbell what on Earth her husband was thinking.

Chance would have been a fine thing, because all Campbell wanted to talk about was how much money Hannah and Bishop Brian had.

As far as organised religions go, the one with which Destiny has most in common is Lotto: a large number of people pay out regularly in the hope of receiving a windfall that is actually never going to happen.

That, of course, is their choice. But not everyone who donates to Destiny gets that choice. You and I, for instance, who as taxpayers contribute to the church via taxpayer-funded grants such as the $860,000 it received from the Ministry of Social Development for youth programmes.

Bishop Brian specifically told his congregation that by laying down their money at his feet, they would qualify for “unprecedented favour” from the Lord.

Bishop Brian is effectively selling God's services as though the Lord is a deity for hire.

This sort of thing, when done by the Catholic church centuries ago, so incensed Martin Luther that it led to the Reformation, one of the greatest upheavals in European history.

Here, it has led to Campbell having a tawdry conversation with Hannah Tamaki about money.

She and her husband, she confessed, are humble wage slaves, receiving a salary signed off by the church's board.

She wouldn't say how much they are paid, but she did acknowledge that they travel business class, which means it's an obscene amount.

She also discussed her jewellery, which, she confirmed, includes a $90,00 ring.

How did she pay for that? Well, she saved up. Have you ever tried to save $90,000? It's nearly impossible.

She wasn't wearing the ring because she was having it insured and getting quotes. I can only imagine what it must be like to have jewellery so valuable that you have to shop around for insurance.

Doesn't hearing about other people's problems make you grateful for your own lot in life?

What critics get most agitated about is that the source of these wages is ultimately the poor people who come to Destiny in the hope of finding wealth rather than providing it.

But giving Destiny your money won't make you richer, it will only make you poorer.

How much poorer?

That's up to you, really. How much are you prepared to give?

Destiny shows its true object of worship

SELF-APPOINTED bishop Brian Tamaki was immensely proud of the money raised by his self-created Destiny Church this week. He asked parishioners to put their tithings on stage, and posted pictures of the sea of $100 and $50 notes on Twitter. He called it, “a sweet-smelling fragrance acceptable to God”.

Later, he was proud of the media attention it attracted. “Top 10 news every time,” he tweeted. “Media criticise but boy, they love the ratings they get.”

There is something endlessly fascinating about Tamaki. To see him doing an imitation of a slick American-style evangelist in a Kiwi accent is to wonder every time how gullible people can be.

It is their own money, of course. They will be aware of the lifestyle they are providing their pastor and his wife. Whatever he is putting into their lives, they must think it worth the money.

That haul on stage, Tamaki told his congregation, was an idea the Holy Spirit had put in his head the night before.

What was the point? Were they celebrating money itself, or the sacrifice of a congregation who probably have not much to spare, or the charitable purposes for which it might be spent?

If the latter, they were not saying what those were.

The point was publicity, which is good news. It suggests business has been slowing for them and needed a boost.

It is nearly 10 years since Tamaki's delusions of a large following led him to think he could be elected to Parliament. Destiny received just 0.62 percent of the vote in 2005, less than half the number who voted this year for Kim Dotcom's Internet-Mana Party.

There is seldom a second coming in politics and Tamaki has not tried again. He has contented himself with maintaining his church, based in South Auckland where, sadly, his is not the only Christian sect that collects a great deal of money from people who can ill afford it.

The churches demand much more of these people than the fees asked by the schools that teach their children. Yet fees go unpaid while churches rake in the money.

None have done so as tastelessly as Tamaki did this week.

A man who displays donations as some sort of evidence of divine favour and self-worth is not a Christian many other churches would recognise.

Some of the harshest passages in the New Testament are directed at the worship of money.

These are probably not passages the Destiny congregation hears.

But in the end, it is their money. They can throw it away if they like

It’s a great business Cardinal Tamaki has decided to go into. You don’t have to provide any goods or services. You just declare yourself a prophet of God, and people give you 10% of their income.

The Herald reports:

Destiny Church is inviting Aucklanders to share in the official opening of its long-promised ‘City of God’ headquarters in Manukau this weekend.

Australian Idol 2009 winner Stan Walker will sing in a free concert in a giant marquee put up yesterday in front of the converted pillow factory in Druces Rd, Wiri, which the church bought in 2010.

The price has not been disclosed but the 3.1ha site has a 2011 rating valuation of $7.65 million.

Guided tours will be offered of the sprawling complex, featuring what is said to be New Zealand’s biggest permanent LED wall, a 24-metre-wide screen which arrived from China last week to form the backdrop for the main 864-seat auditorium.

Giant photographs of founders Bishop Brian Tamaki and his wife Hannah hang in several public spaces in between a school with 170 students, an early childhood centre for 70, a gym, a recording studio and function rooms.

Oh dear. Rather North Korean isn’t it.

Destiny Church ministers and leaders are heading to its Brisbane branch after more than half the congregation – including its pastor – walked out.

Bishop Brian Tamaki, who founded the church in New Zealand in 1998, is expected to be among those heading to Australia this week after the resignation of Pastor Andrew Stock.

Members of the Destiny Church in Brisbane, who were at Sunday’s service, contacted the Herald yesterday.

It is believed Pastor Stock – who has been at the Brisbane branch pulpit for about three years – withdrew from his role because a newly introduced covenant went against his beliefs, a member said.

Standing up for your beliefs is to be praised.

The member said the covenant told members to “give it heaps” as they worked towards a $3 million project which included building a $1.3 million budget to go towards putting Bishop Tamaki on TVNZ every morning, from Monday to Friday.

The covenant also encouraged members to go without coffee, takeaways and Sky TV for up to seven months to help give more in their church tithes.

All so Archbishop Tamaki can get even richer. I bet you he won’t be going without coffee.

The church member who contacted the Herald said many in the congregation felt the covenant was going against the Gospel.

“It was a money-making scheme. All the people who make covenant with Bishop Tamaki have to buy a $300 ring.

“You might think I’m stupid for going into the church in the first place. But I [only] found out it was a cult after I went in.”

Sadly, for many it is too late by then.

The member said it was widely known that all Destiny Church pastors had to sign a contract.

In that contract, it said if they were to withdraw as a pastor they were forbidden to pastor at any other church for two years and their new church could not be less than 50km from a Destiny Church.

Never heard of God having restraint of trade clauses for his servants before.
